image of missing teen Alexis GloverAlexis Glover is a thirteen-year-old developmentally disabled teen who was last seen on Wednesday afternoon at the Central Library on Mathis Avenue in Manassas, VA. Alexis also suffers from other medical issues. Police are utilizing all tools at their disposal to locate Alexis including K-9 units, a reverse telephone calling system to notify area residence about the missing child, and helicopters from Fairfax and Virginia State Police agencies.

Police stated that Alexis would most likely hide from police officers so they are requesting residents in the area search their properties, including sheds, dog houses, or any other places a small child may hide.

Alexis is a thirteen-year-old black female who has black hair and brown eyes. She is 5’3″ tall and weighs 87lbs. She may be in need of medical attention.

If you find Alexis or know anything about her disappearance you are asked to call 9-1-1 or police at 703-792-6500.

Alexis has been missing for twenty-four hours and has survived overnight temperatures below 30 degrees for one night. The current temperature in Virginia is 37 degrees and the overnight temperature is expected to drop to 28 degrees. Hopefully Alexis will not have to spend another night in the freezing cold.

image of Freedia Glover, adoptive motherThere is more information about Alexis’ disappearance, her medical condition, psychiatric condition, and family background. She is diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and takes medication for that illness. Her mother says when she takes her medication functions as a 7-year-old child. However, when she is off the medication she deteriorates rapidly. Alexis developed the PTSD from previous abuse in her life. Her adopted mother, Freedia Glover, also went on to say that Alexis suffers from Sickle Cell Disease.

Alexis has a history of running away according to her mother when she does not get her way. She has run away so frequently that a GPS tracking bracelet was assigned to Alexis. Police found that bracelet near the library where she was last seen; apparently Alexis cut it off her wrist.

Freedia Glover claims that yesterday when she informed Alexis she was taking her to a psychiatric appointment Alexis got upset and took off. She also stated her daughter will most likely not call because she is scared of being in trouble. Due to her past abuse she is afraid of getting into trouble.

Alexis Glover’s body was located this afternoon 7.5 miles away from where she went missing. Her body was found by a man who lives on Asdee Lane near the McCoart Administration Building. Alexis was submerged in a shallow creek containing two feet of water. Police are investigating the case and have not yet ruled out foul play.
From www.insidenova.com:

Detectives are trying to determine if the child wandered to her death, or if she was the victim of foul play.

“All theories are open at this point,” Prince William County police 1st Sgt. Kim Chinn said.

I hope this case does not turn out like the Ricky Holland case. The circumstances are somewhat similar.

5:30p.m. PT
Prince William County Police Chief Charlie Deane told reporters this afternoon that Alexis was a victim of a homicide. He did not elaborate and indicated the autopsy would most likely be performed sometime this weekend.

Alexis was adopted at age 6.

I am not really sure of what to make of the mother’s demeanor in this video. I watched an interview conducted with her while Alexis was still considered missing and she appeared very calm. In this interview she cannot keep her eyes from wandering and she cannot keep her body still. I suppose she could be in shock. Anybody would be in shock after learning of the untimely death and most likely murder of their child.

We are at a disadvantage during the above interview because we cannot hear the questions being posed to Freedia Glover. However, her response to a question, I am assuming having to do with what the family wants from the public, was a bit puzzling to me. She is basically saying she wants someone to come forward to bring closure, to give them an idea of where she (Alexis) was and how she was feeling. The uncle elaborates more by stating they want people to come forward who may have seen Alexis walking or getting into a vehicle.

The police have not released information stating whether there is a video of Alexis and her mother in the parking lot of the library on the day of the disappearance. They have also not indicated if Alexis was seen at or around the library by anyone else on the day of her reported disappearance.

Today police were back at the library during the time of Alexis’ reported disappearance stopping cars and passing out fliers. They are requesting information from the public no matter how insignificant it may seem.

Police arrived at the Glover residents at 7p.m. tonight to conduct a search of the residence.

It looks like this case is going to turn out just as I had suspected – Alexis met her fate at the hands of a family member.

7:45p.m. PT
Police had a search warrant to allow them access to the Glover property located at 8245 Sunset Drive. Investigators searched the trunk of a car, the back yard area and inside the home. Some of the evidence retrieved during the search included photos of the back yard area, a small plastic tub that was located in the back yard, and an object that could have been a laptop computer.

Earlier in the day police released a grainy video obtained from a school near the Central Library where Alexis was last seen. The grainy video shows an image of a child who could be Alexis moments after running from her mother.

Updates:  February 2009

February 20, 2009
Alfreedia Glover was released on bail earlier this month. As of this writing the only charges she faces are child neglect and filing a false police report. New charges may follow based on the release of the coroner’s report.

Police had opined that during the early morning hours of January 8, Alexis suffered some sort of medical emergency. Instead of getting medical aid for her adopted daughter, Alfreedia Glover took Alexis to the creek and placed her face down in the water, she later called police to report her disappearance.

The coroner’s report indicates that Alexis died as the result of a homicide caused by drowning and exposure to the freezing temperatures. Water was found in Alexis’ lungs so she was still alive when Alfreedia placed her face down in the creek.

Soon after Alexis’ case broke neighbors told investigators that at the beginning of January Alexis was found wandering around in the early morning hours wearing only a vinyl barbecue cover. She also had a contusion on her head. She told the neighbors that her mother hit her in the head with a stick she kept in the garage to punish her. She said the reason for the punishment that morning was she put clothing on without “earning the clothing”. Alexis was reluctant to give her name and according to the neighbors Alexis was very hungry. They fed her a couple of sandwiches.

Alexis finally gave the neighbors a phone number of a therapist. The therapist advised the couple to call Child Protective Services, which they did. CPS advised they would keep their identity confidential and would send police to the scene with a social worker. Police arrived at the home; however the social worker did not accompany the officer. The officer called paramedics to care for Alexis. The reporting party’s phone rang and the person on the other end asked to speak to the police officer. Both the officer and the reporting parties were shocked to find out the caller was Alfreedia Glover, Alexis’ mother. She was given the reporting party’s home phone number by CPS.

Alexis was transported to the hospital for treatment and Alfreedia Glover and the social worker later arrived at the hospital. It was determined that it was safe for Alexis to return to her adoptive home. Less than three weeks later Alexis was murdered.

A trial date has been set in the murder trial of Alfreedia Gregg-Glover. In March the judge ordered Gregg-Glover undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine if she was competent to stand trial. This week the judge ruled she is competent to stand trial and set the date for July 7, 2009. The trial is expected to last two days. I will be following the case on my other blog, The End of the Story.

Virginia certainly does not fool around when it comes to going to trial.

March 3, 2009

A Prince William County Commonwealth Grand Jury indicted Alfreedia Glover for felony murder regarding the death of her 13-year-old adopted daughter, Alexis Glover, of Manassas.

Poor Alexis. Somehow it seems there should have been more than one indictment handed down in this case. I am thinking of the social worker who failed to remove Alexis from the Glover home after she was treated for the head injury at the hospital. I am thinking of the people who manned the telephones and took the repeated reports of suspected child abuse called in by the school bus drivers. They saw the brusies on Alexis and listened to Alexis tell them repeatedly that she was afraid of her mother and believed her mother was going to kill her.

Those social workers should have removed Alexis from the home and erred on the side of caution. When will the social workers in this country have to answer for their failure to act to protect children? I am not interested in hearing the same old tired excuse that they are overworked, have too many cases, and are underpaid. They need to remember that they are not just doing a job – they are making life and death decisions and unfortunately those decisions result in the death of the child they are supposed to protect from harm.

I will be covering the trial of Alfreedia Glover on my other blog, The End of the Story
