Original Post

image of missing childAaroné Thompson was reported missing Monday afternoon from her home in Aurora, Colorado by her father Aaron Thompson. He told police that there was some sort of disagreement about discipline and she walked out of the house. I don’t recall reading information about how long she was gone before her father went to look for her, but he claims he searched for her and then called police.

That night Aaroné did not return home during that bitterly cold night. I believe the temperature dropped to 12 degrees. She did not return home on Tuesday, or Wednesday. It snowed Tuesday night.

Police called off the search for Aaroné today saying that they had searched every place a child that young could have gone. Aaroné is only six-years-old.

When police began searching on Monday afternoon they made comments to the media indicating that the family was not being too cooperative with the search. They were reluctant to discuss what problems they were having with the family because they felt the investigation might turn into one of a criminal nature later on and they did not want to jeopardize the investigation. One thing police did mention was that they were unable to obtain a recent photo of the girl; the only photo provided to law enforcement was 1 1/2 years old. That is the photo at the top of this blog entry.

Police believe the girl has been dead for at least 1 1/2 years and the request for help for her recent disappearance was fabricated. Search warrants have been served on the home and the father and the live-in girlfriend are being looked at as ‘persons of interest’ in the death of six-year-old Aaroné.

Seven other children live in the home. They have been removed from their home and placed in protective custody with Child Protective Services.

The family is upset with how they have been treated. They feel that they have been treated unfairly and have hired a family friend to be their spokesperson. They are considering hiring an attorney. I believe it may be a good idea to get an attorney at this point, but not for the reasons they want to hire an attorney. Other information learned during the investigation was that the girl did not attend school. Her mother lives in a woman’s shelter in Michigan. She told reporters she could not afford the cost of travel to come and look for her daughter.

Perhaps they are innocent of any wrong-doing. In my last blog entry I wrote of how we have had at least one child murdered each month this year in the United States. So far, if Aaroné was murdered this month instead of a few years ago then that will be a total of two murdered children for the month of November.

I wonder when will it end, the slaughtering of our children.

Part II

image of missing childI am trying to understand why a parent who had murdered a child would report that child as missing 1 1/2 years after the fact. It would seem to me that a secret like that kept for so long would be kept as a secret and taken to the grave.

The police are pretty confident that Aaroné Thompson was murdered in her home at least 1 1/2 years ago. They cite some interesting reasons; there were no pictures of Aaroné in the home older than 4 1/2 years and she had never been enrolled in school. It is as if she had fallen off of the face of the earth. They also received a tip from someone close to the family indicating that Aaroné most likely is deceased and has been for some time.

According to law enforcement officials, interviews conducted with the children indicate they have acknowledged that Aaroné has been gone from the home for a considerable length of time. If this is true, Aaroné was not the only victim. It is a horrible thought that these children have had to keep that secret. I wonder what the effects on their psyches will be in the years to come.

Thus far Aaroné’s father and his live-in girlfriend have not cooperated with the investigation.

image of Aarone Thompson's fatherAgain, I wonder why someone would fabricate a story of a missing child for one that they knew was murdered. The only excuse I have come up with that is logical to me is that someone was coming to visit the family. Aaroné’s birthday was approaching on November 30th. Perhaps this person, a relative was particularly interested in seeing Aaroné. There was no way of getting around her not being there unless she was reported missing, possibly a victim of a kidnapping. This would bring sympathy for the family and it would also get them off the hook as being involved in their child’s murder; at least for a while until they could dispose of the body in a remote location. Could the murderer be that ignorant to the fact that law enforcement, once finding the remains would be able to pinpoint just how long she had been deceased?

Time will tell if Aaroné was murdered or if she in fact walked out her door on Monday, November 14, 2005 never to be seen again.

Update: September 2008

Much has happened over the past few years with this case. Aaron Thompson and his live-in girlfriend Shelly lost permanent custody of their children. Shelly died sometime last year from a heart condition.

Aaron was indicted earlier this year and will stand trial November 3, 2008. It is interesting because the deceased former live-in girlfriend was also named in the indictment.

I will be covering this trial on my other blog,  The End of the Story.

Yes, you read it right, a Virgin Island AMBER Alert. When I first saw the missing poster for this child with the letters “VI” for what I thought was the initials of the state of residence I thought it was an error. Certainly they must have meant “VA” for Virginia. Anyway, call me nationalistic in my thinking. But you can’t call me that either because much to my surprise the Virgin Islands are considered part of the United States. Of course that echoes in my brain somewhere – United States Virgin Islands. I guess I just think AMBER Alerts are for the fifty states that make up United States of America. Enough of my meandering.

According to a Virgin Islands news website called St. Croix Source, two-year-old Alayah Watley resides with her mother on the island. She was last seen on Saturday at the home of her father, Rolando Watley. According to the article, Alayah was in her father’s temporary custody, however he is currently “off island”.

image of Alayah Watley, missing childThe AMBER Alert issued by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children states that Alayah is the victim of a non-family abduction and is believed to be traveling in a car owned by her father but driven by Candice Hazel. The AMBER Alert goes on to state that if contact is made with Alayah or either Candice Hazel, Delicia Hazel, Tiffany Hazel, Kyle Hazel or Rolando Watley police should be called. It sounds as if Alayah has more than one abductor, including her father.

I like the way the reporter for the St. Croix paper put it in no uncertain terms what will happen to anyone not contacting law enforcement if they know anything about this abduction:

If you are with Watley or may know her whereabouts please contact Detective M. Myers at 712-6046 immediately. Anyone withholding information on the whereabouts of this missing child and does not contact police immediately will face criminal charges.

It is refreshing to see someone not be so politically correct when asking for help to find a missing child.

Victim: Alayah Watley

Alayah is a 2-year-old Black female with black hair and brown eyes. She is 1’5″ tall and weighs 30lbs. When last seen Alayah was wearing black pants, a red shirt, gold earrings and no shoes. Her hair is worn in braids and her ears are pierced. Alayah is in need of medical attention.

Suspect: Candice Hazel

There is no information about Candice Hazel except that she is a female.

Suspect Vehicle

White Compass with License Number CDH-815

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Detective M. Myers at 712-6046 or the Virgin Islands Police Department at 340-772-9111.

Updates

July 20, 2009: 9:30 p.m. PST

The AMBER Alert activated this afternoon for Alayah has been canceled. A relative contacted police this evening and said Alayah was with her. Police interviewed the relative and then returned Alayah to her mother. Detectives will contact the Attorney General to see what charges, if any, will be filed.

image of missing child Lindsey Baumimage of missing child Lindsey BaumAccording to news reports all 10-year-old Lindsey Baum was doing Friday night was walking four blocks to her home from a friend’s house.

Lindsey had some sort of argument with her brother on the way to the friend’s house. She was only at the friends home for a short while until the friend’s father, Scott Williams, encouraged Lindsey to return to her home before it got too dark. The time was 9:15 p.m. in McCleary, Washington. In that part of the United States McCleary is just becoming blanketed by darkness. A friend even walked with Lindsey half way to her home. According to the friend nothing untoward happened while they walked together.

Lindsey’s mother, Melissa Baum, says her daughter has never run away from home. She did acknowledge that Lindsey has had difficulty adjusting to her parent’s recent split but she feels confident her daughter would not run away from home. First of all, she does not have money to run away with. Well, when children run away they don’t usually think first about how they will support themselves on the streets. They just go on emotion and run.

Lindsey’s father has been contacted at his home in Tennessee and he is not suspected in his daughter’s disappearance.

According to news accounts McCleary is a small town and the neighbors know each other very well. According to Dave Pimentel of the Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office:

“Such a small community like this – you can’t do much in a town this size without everybody knowing about it,”… “Everybody in town knows she’s unaccounted for.”1

Not only does everyone in town know she is unaccounted for, they are all out looking for her. Most of the search is being conducted in the town and surrounding forests. A bloodhound brought into the search failed to pick up Lindsey’s scent.

As of this morning the FBI has been brought into the search because of their experience in solving missing children cases.

Missing Child: Lindsey J. Baum

Lindsey is described as a 10-year-old white female with brown hair and brown eyes. She stands 4’9″ tall and weighs approximately 80 pounds. When last seen she was wearing a gray or blue pullover sweatshirt with blue jeans and black shoes.2

Anyone knowing Lindsey’s whereabouts or the circumstances surrounding her disappearance is asked to call the Grays Harbor 911 Center at (800) 281-6944 or the McCleary Police Department at (360) 495-3107.

Updates

July 1, 2009

There is really no news in the search for Lindsey Baum. Her mother has been quoted in the local media that she believes her daughter is still alive but no longer in McCleary. She believes someone abducted her daughter. She bases her belief in the fact that the town has been thoroughly searched with no sign of her daughter.

I looked at the list of registered sex offenders in McCleary – list totals four and they all appear to be under the age of 30. One registered sex offender piqued my interest because his offense was communicating with a minor for immoral purposes. It is not a stretch to think he may have had contact with Lindsey because they both have MySpace pages. I was dismayed to see that Lindsey’s MySpace is not set to private. This is not a judgment, but an observation and my opinion. Some of the content on her page makes her appear much older than 10. I am not referring to pictures on her site because I did not see any pictures other than her profile picture. It is just my opinion that Lindsey should have kept her profile private.
I visited the MySpace page of the sex offender in question and I think he professes his desire or attraction for adult females too much. One would never suspect he has a conviction for being a pedophile because he has so many ‘seductive looking’ adult female friends. Oh, well I guess it is a good cover.

I hope Lindsey is found safe and sound and she did just decide to run away from home. Maybe she decided to head out to Tennessee to live with her dad and he is unaware of her plans. The longer Lindsey is missing, the worse the outcome is apt to be.

July 2, 2009

Lindsey’s mother and the father of the friend where Lindsey was last seen volunteered to take polygraph exams. According to a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s office both individuals passed their exams and authorities are happy with their cooperation and timeline of events.
Specialists from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children have been brought in to aide in the investigation. Henry Schmidt, one of the investigators with the NCMEC opined that Lindsey most likely left with someone she knows:

“From what knowledge we have and the information that I have that it’s someone that she possibly knows, somebody that is in the area.”…3

Maybe she did meet up with one of the local sex offenders.

I think of two cases in particular of children who went missing and later found murdered. Jamie Rose Bolin went missing and her body was found in the apartment of a neighbor who lived below the family. She was 10-years-old. Destiny Norton was last seen playing on her front porch. Her body was found in a neighbor’s basement. He lived on the other side of a backyard fence. Destiny was just 5-years-old. I guess my point is you really can’t trust anyone just because they are a neighbor and you have known them for quite some time.

July 28, 2009: 2 p.m. PST

Search teams made up of the FBI, Gray’s Harbor and Pierce County Sheriff’s office are in McCleary today following up on leads. They are utilizing search dogs to aid them in the search for Lindsey Baum. CrimeStoppers has offered a $6,000 reward to anyone with information leading to the whereabouts of Lindsey Baum.4
